New national airline transports pups as passengers
Some of the 50 passengers on the nation's newest airline couldn't help but wag their tails when their plane took off from
Republic Airport in East Farmingdale Tuesday.
Some of them said the flight was "ruff." Others purred with satisfaction. For many, it was their first time on an airplane.
But this was no ordinary multilegged journey, though the turboprop plane did stop in Washington, Chicago and Denver on the way to Los Angeles, with mandatory potty breaks to ensure passengers' comfort.
The 50 dogs and cats took relatively small steps for cats and dogs, but their journey – as maiden passengers in an all-pets flight across
the United States – was a giant leap for their kind.
Five planes will serve five metropolitan destinations, cities in which pet lovers are willing to spend a little more on their companions, Binder said. The flights will be weekly. Binder and Wiesel hope to be in 25 cities in the next five years.
